The best example of this is the momentВ DoomguyВ falls into a pool of radioactive waste. It often draws attention to its own absurdity and dials the madness all the way up. The credited writers вЂ“ billed as Steve вЂњBody BagвЂќ Behling and Michael вЂњSplatterвЂќ Stewart вЂ“ were either high off some quality stuff while writing it, or they were going for a very specificВ metaВ tone. Throughout the story he appearsВ to beВ in the grip of a severe breakdown, where he switches from internal to external monologues, even narrating a change of scenery with вЂњ Wow! Now IвЂ™m in a completely different place!вЂќ HeвЂ™s a FrankensteinвЂ™s Monster of every beefed up eighties action hero you can think of, and his dialogue ranges from corny to downright sublime. WhileВ DoomguyВ in the game has no real personality to speak of, in the comic heвЂ™s an absolute gem. It also features a line-up of classic Doom monsters like zombies,В cacodemonsВ (or as Doomguy calls them вЂњ BIG MOUTHED FLOATING THINGIES!вЂќ) and imps. TheВ DoomguyвЂ™s quest is to find theВ BFGВ 9000, and along the way, he gradually gathers more powerful weapons from a chainsaw to a shotgun, and all the way up to a plasma rifle. To the comicвЂ™s credit, itВ does a decentВ job of recreating DoomвЂ™s basic structure. ThatвЂ™s just a small taste of the craziness within, and it justs keeps getting weirder from there.

Then he flees in search of a gun, while the monster just stands and laughs. He states hisВ desireВ to rip theВ creatureВ apart, screaming furiously вЂњ YOU ARE HUGE! THAT MEANS YOU HAVE HUGE GUTS! RIP AND TEAR!вЂќ He tries to punch it, only to realise his power-up has worn off.

The third page вЂ“ where he confronts aВ CyberdemonВ вЂ“ has sealed the comicвЂ™s place in history. He mocks the dead demon with вЂњThatвЂ™s your spinal cord, baby! Dig it!вЂќ before promptly kicking down a door. His inner dialogue reads вЂњ WhoвЂ™s a man and half? IвЂ™m a man and a half! A Berserker packinвЂ™ man and a half!вЂќ On the next page, heвЂ™s gripping the severed spine, his face distorted with pure fury. Page one hasВ DoomguyВ in the midst of a Berserk rage вЂ“ which Doom players will know is the power up that lets you punch monsters into red paste вЂ“ andВ is seenВ ripping out a demonвЂ™s spine.
